(DRaaS) Disaster Recovery as a Service explained

What is Disaster Recovery?

Disaster Recovery defines how a business would recover from a disaster and should include both processes and a plan to allow for restoration of items such as; networks, data, applications and people.

The commonly used process for Disaster Recovery is Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) as explained below;

  • A Recovery Point Objective: Defines how often you would like to protect your data. Essentially its an acceptance of how much data a business is prepared to lose in the event of a disaster.

  • A Recovery Time Objective: Defines how quickly you’d like to be able to recover from a disaster.

Both RPO’s and RTO’s can be different for each workload and we recommend classifying each of your IT workloads based on their criticality to the business.

Key Benefits of Disaster Recovery as a Service

Flexibility

This single service eliminates multiple cost points which include rent, power, infrastructure, IT staffing and licensing.

Cost minimising solution

DRaaS allows entities of all sizes to be effectively protected from the adverse effects of IT downtime, due to economies of scale.

Increased resource efficiency

Customer-owned/ operated DR data centers can be costly due to paying for what you may use upfront. Through Draas you pay for and consume only what is necessary.

DraaS enables critical business applications and data to be restored within hours or even minutes (contigent on SLAas), maintaining business continutiy.

Think Solutions has operated a 100% Australian helpdesk since it has been established (1998), which means fast and local support in your timezone.

Backup & Disaster Recovery solutions are critical to all businesses regardless of their size and industry. A well architected backup & disaster recovery solution will provide the ability to minimise downtime, eliminate the risk of data loss and provide the ability to recover from a disaster.

However, its important to note the differences between both Backup and Disaster Recovery (DR) as both are mandatory but also uniquely different.

What is Backup?

Backup is the process of taking a copy of data from multiple points in time and providing the ability to recover this data as needed. Backup protects data from accidental or intentional deletion, corruptions or certain malicious attacks that may compromise one or many files such as ransomware.

Backups can be taken multiple times throughout a day, week, month and year to ensure that you have access to multiple recovery points for your data at all times.

Our recommendation for all backup technologies is to align to the industry standard 3-2-1 backup principal which ensure that you;

  • Have at least three copies of your data

  • Stored on two different media types

  • With at least one copy stored offsite
