Endpoint Security

The Australian Cyber Security Centre’s (ACSC) annual cyber threat report for July 2023 to June 2024 underscores the significance of endpoint security in a strong cybersecurity posture. The report highlights a concerning trend of attackers targeting endpoints as an entry point to networks, with attacks including ransomware, malware, and phishing. Additionally, the ACSC notes that these attacks can have serious consequences, such as data breaches, financial loss, and reputational damage. It is imperative that businesses take proactive measures to protect their endpoints and prevent cyber threats from infiltrating their networks.

The report also highlights the following key findings and statistics:

  1. The ACSC responded to 1100 cybersecurity incidents in the past year.
  2. Ransomware attacks were a major concern, with the ACSC responding to over 121 incidents (FY23/24), compared to 118 incidents (FY22/23) the previous year.
  3. Malware remained a common threat, with the ACSC observing 17% of the 143 incidents that impacted critical infrastructure were from malware.
  4. Phishing remained a major threat in 2023–24, driving many of the 87,000+ cybercrime reports. It was a key tactic behind identity fraud (26% of individual reports) and business email compromise (20% of business reports).
  5. The average self-reported cost of cybercrime per business report fell 8% overall in 2023–24, with small businesses up 8% to $49,600, medium businesses down 35% to $62,800, and large businesses down 11% to $63,600.

Frequency of Cybercrime reports

The fiscal year 2023–24 saw a continued high volume of cybercrime reports submitted through ReportCyber, with over 87,400 incidents reported, reflecting a slight 7% decrease from the previous year. On average, a cybercrime report was lodged every 6 minutes, consistent with the prior year. These figures underscore the persistent nature of cyber threats and the ongoing need for proactive cyber security measures.
